Guitar production begins from wood storage

How the Classical Guitar is Made

Growth of tree affect the wood quality?

Major parts of guitars are constructed of wood material which come from outside of Japan. Wood is easily damaged by temperature and humidity therefore extra care is needed under high humidity and temperature. It is important to store wood in a humid-controlled area.

The top board of a classical guitar is constructed of spruce or western red cedar. The German Spruce has a generally white appearance and North American red cedar has a reddish tinge. The German Spruce wood tends to be sticky. It produces a clear and tight sound when it is used in a guitar.

North American red cedar is known to produce a soft and low tone with mellow voice.

The environment of tree growth also an important factor for determining quality. Trees facing south to receive constant sunlight have larger knots which are not the best material for making musical instruments. Trees in an area that receives sunlight occasionally in the morning and evening have fine growth rings and are better quality materials.
